Indigenous uniforms
South East Melbourne Phoenix
2021 - 2022

For the NBL21 and '22 seasons, I collaborated with Indigenous artists to help design and develop the Indigenous uniforms for the South East Melbourne Phoenix. It was a fantastic opportunity to further understand the production process for professional sport uniforms as well as learning how to produce mockups for the strike-offs and tech packs.
NBL22 Indigenous Uniform
The artwork for the South East Melbourne Phoenix NBL22 uniform was designed by Indigenous artist Katie Bugden and provided to the club as a canvas print and a digital vector file.
As part of the briefing process and to help differentiate from the previous year’s design, I asked for the design to be monochromatic, using our club’s shade of green.
I consulted with Katie on the placement of the artwork on the uniform and asked for a sample of her handwriting, adding the title of the piece ‘Ngiyani’ which means ‘We all’ in the Kamilaroi language. This was placed on the jersey above the Champion patch to add a personal touch to the uniform.
NBL21 Indigenous Uniform
The artwork for the South East Melbourne Phoenix NBL21 uniform was designed by Indigenous artist Heather Kennedy and provided to the club as a canvas print.
After taking some photos of the canvas, I proceeded to digitally trace all of the major elements of the design.
I consulted with Heather on the placement of each part of the pattern on the uniform, preparing all of the necessary print files for the next stage in the production phase.
